Vaporizer Marijuana Pipes

By:

Published: November 6, 2006

Vaporizer pipes are rapidly becoming the most popular alternative to conventional tobacco, therapeutic herbs and marijuana pipes.

Unlike other means of smoking, vaporizer pipes are believed by some to decrease or completely eliminate the dangerous by-products and thus side-effects of smoking. Some studies arguably suggest vaporizers actually enhance the concentration of the beneficial or desired chemicals within the tobacco or herbs.

Also known as vapies, vaporizers are not solely used for smoking, but also are used in aromatherapy.

In some respects vaporizers are a cross between hookahs and traditional marijuana pipes, like bongs. Much like hookahs, vaporizers do not burn the smokeables, but rather heat the substance to the point where smoke is released.

The difference between marijuana vaporizers and other means of marijuana smoking is that pipes, cigarettes and bongs use combustion – direct burning – to release the intoxicating or therapeutic oils within the smokeables. Vapies heat the tobacco by two different means.

Vapies come in two general styles, categorized by how the smokables are heated. The first style of vaporizer pipes are conduction pipes. Conduction pipes use conducted heat to release the intoxicants or aromatics. Conduction vaporizers, for instance, would use a heating element to warm the potent smokables to just below their combustion temperature.

The second style of vapies is convective. Convection vaporizers use heated air passed over the tobacco to release the smoke.

There are many benefits to using marijuana vaporizers. The first includes eliminating the use of lighters, especially butane gas lighters. Alleged links between butane gas and neurotoxic effects such as permanent neurological disabilities have long been studied.

Marijuana special interest groups like the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws (NORML) and Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) have sponsored experiments and studies comparing smoking marijuana by conventional means to smoking marijuana using vapies.

Testing commissioned jointly by NORML and MAPS have found that since the tobacco, in this case marijuana, is heated to just below the combustion point, carcinogens and toxins, such as benzene, naphthalene and toluene, are substantially reduced.

Based on other testing, NORML and MAPS suggest marijuana vaporizer users should inhale less tar (no less dangerous tar) in comparison to combustion-based smoking methods. In addition to allegedly inhaling less tar levels, the drug advocacy groups maintain vapies also deliver at least equal, but potentially higher concentrations of THC to the user.

High-quality vapies can be found in every corner of the Internet. Vapies range in price from $10 to $200. The Super Vapezilla, winner of the High Times Magazine Best Vaporizer Award in 2004 and 2005 can run as high as $500. High-end models like the Super Vapezilla include features like digital controllers, ceramic heating elements and aluminum chassis.

For those who think $500 is too expensive for a marijuana pipe, other middle-of-the-road solutions exist. Pocket size vapies from Aromazap and Vapor Genie can run from $10 to $50. Frequently considered the most reliable vaporizers, Vapor Warez's Vaper-cannon line runs from $99 to $150.
